Running

Relax, you’re Running!

Relax, you're Running! Week #1 “I could never even run a mile, I don’t know how you do it.” “I can’t run, I have knee problems.” “I find running is so boring.” I’ve heard these comments – and many more – over the years any time I get into conversations about running. I don’t know why it is, but a lot of people who know I am an avid runner feel the need to tell me why they’re NOT. I don’t really ask them –it just comes ..read more

“Run Like the Wind!”: The 113th Boston Marathon

It is the day after the 113th Boston Marathon, and I am still trying to take it all in. Not just the Women’s Elite race, where Kosgei beat Tune by a mere one second – and just 9 seconds ahead of U.S. favorite Kara Goucher. Not just the moment when I reluctantly overtook Dick Hoyt and his son Rick on Heartbreak Hill, and quietly gave tribute to a love that no one can imagine or conceive. Not when I ran a qualifying ..read more

You Are a Runner!

You Are a Runner! Published in baystateparent Magazine Have you ever thought about running to get in shape and perhaps work off some of that “baby fat?” Or maybe running appeals to you because it’s more affordable than a gym membership and is just a step away from your front door? Perhaps you’d like to try running, but don’t know how to start, what to wear, are worried about getting out of breath or hurting your knees. Or maybe you’ve tried running in the ..read more

Four Weeks Until the Boston Marathon

Four Weeks Until the Boston Marathon I  heard from a few fellow marathoners today… “Four weeks from today we’ll be at the starting line..” For those of you who don’t know what that feels like, it’s torture. We’ve been training for this event for months. We’ve endured low temps, high mileage, emotions that run from the lows of “Hell’s Alley” to the top of “Heartbreak Hill.”  We’ve calculated, we’ve conserved, we’ve raised funds, we’ve set our alarms every Friday night,  we doubt ourselves every Monday morning. Our minds are ..read more

Running the Boston Marathon for My Mom

Running the Boston Marathon for My Mom It’s just a month away from the 113th running of the Boston Marathon. I will be at the starting line in Hopkinton, along with 28 other teammates from the Alzheimer’s Association Run for the Memory team. And my family, friends, and a half-million spectators will be loudly cheering me on as I make my 26.2-way from Hopkinton to Boston. But the biggest cheerleader in my life ― my mom―will be the person I hear the loudest in my ..read more

The Making of Marathon Mama

The Making of Marathon Mama  “Success isn’t how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started.” A Proverb  You might say I found marathoning, step by slow step. Or perhaps it found me. I was never an athlete growing up; In fact, I have a hard time applying that term to myself even today, after 10 marathons, half-dozen half-marathons, and quite a few road races along the way. I was the youngest in a family of seven children, growing up with no sports (other ..read more

Five Sports Nutrition Nuggets

Five Sports Nutrition Nuggets I recently heard sports nutritionist and author Nancy Clark speak at the Massachusetts Alzheimer’s Association “Run For the Memory” 2009 Boston Marathon group meeting. I’ve heard Nancy speak before; she has generously donated her time and expertise to charity runners preparing for Boston. Nancy is a best-selling author, speaker, workshop leader, consultant, and all-around guru on nutrition for both casual and professional athletes. So she really knows her stuff. The thing I always appreciate about Nancy is her balanced approach to sports ..read more

Running in the cold – with a cold.

Running in the cold - with a cold. I woke up feeling miserable this morning. I’ve been nursing a bad cold the last few days, and didn’t sleep well. After getting all the kids out the door with winter coats, hats and mittens, I looked at the outdoor thermometer. Eleven degrees. I checked weather.com, and the “feels like” temp was minus 6 degrees, with bone-chilling winds whipping from the Northwest at 15 mph. I decided to go running. Call me crazy (and many people do), but I think running in ..read more

Ready to Fight

Ready to Fight  “I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”   2 Timothy 4:7 Sometimes, just when you least expect it, you meet someone who changes the way you see life. You can’t plan it. It just happens. It happened to me the past October, at the Newport Breakers Marathon in Newport, RI.   I choose the marathon for lots of reasons:  It was a relatively small field of runners, the course covered many scenic landmarks, including downtown Newport, ..read more
